un histoire du
Jamplant

the
Jamplant
began a two years ago when Barrie V
happened upon the Revolution bar,
(little did they know, heehee)
and decided
'hey, this looks like a nice room to play in'..
- it's always been about the wider picture - the whole..
and has gone from strength to strength since that time,
nurturing the raw talent that is now gushing forth from
the vast glob of energy that has been coagulating
underneath sunny Wolverplankton for centuries.. aeons...
this as well as having increasingly regular visits from
artists and players from all over the UK and
from as far afield as Philadelphia, USA
and Wollongong in Australia!
all of whom, we might add, have
been pretty globsmacked by
what's going on right here!

Tripped-out sub-Stooge rock, instrumental electronica, and synth-laden Pop Metal from these U.K. -based stylistic schizoids. Psychedelia seems to be the one unifying element in these songs, but whatever genre is being explored, Barrie V attacks his work with fervor and creativity to produce futuristic sonic gems!

Time to Time

available NOW! from the Revolution (on Mondays!)
and 11even (Wednesdays!) (other outlets tba)

The cd features 12 - yes, count 'em, 12 tracks, including one of a clutch of new songs from 2003; 'from Time to Time', in it's originally recorded, 'pimples-and-all-notepad-demo' format, (collectable or what?) three versions of 'Summer of Love' (one acoustic), a 'limited edition' 'introduction' - 'I am' a sampled-remix of Bjork/Akasha outtakes - on the first hundred cds only, a very heavy and previously un-released early version of 'CyBerkarma', remixed and sample-spangled versions of 'Two Worlds' and 'Don't Think', the first home-studio recording of Immaculate Deception', the Colours of Love BazmixguitarJam' - sampled solos from the studio demo - 'cos I just like 'em… most uplifting… plus a sample of the the 'bondbass dancefloor' version of 'Don't Think' and an exerpt from never before heard instrumental work - now in progress again - 'ZuluDruid' - includes songs from the forthcoming
post-corporate-eclecticist
CD The Road of Borrux

(latest - we'll be adding live tracks recorded at the Jamplant
and 11eVen to future releases of the above CD)

it puts a whole new retrospective on things though, doesn't it?
- too much, too much farkin' retrospective now...!

Review :

Maggi Pierce + EJ the MPE Band

Maggi Pierce + EJ paint wonderfully uplifting, lyrical melody driven musical
watercolours, from the jaunty and happy to the deep and meaningful..
calling in & tipping a nod to the Beatles, Led Zep,
Joni Mitchell,
Queen, & the Beachboys on the way..
all beautifully played & harmonised with rhythm & feeling..

Maggi (she of the enchanting voice) Pierce & EJ are incredibly accomplished
musically, employing a colourful spectrum of instrumentation & musical styles
coupled with a deceptively (in the nicest possible way) charming naivety to deliver
quite the most listenable & immediately accessible set of songs you'll hear anywhere..
at any level... on any stage.. worldwide.. acoustic eclectisism at it's finest!

We love this band!

so much so we're already naming them band of the year for 2004!

So will you... They're absolutely fabulous dahlings!

Review :

Mark & Anthony

This self titled CD is about as sweet as it gets.

This recording has six great songs, and I mean great in the old fashioned sense,
as in Simon & Garfunkel, when the strength of a good song was such it could rely
on it's own melody, beautifully sung and harmonised and accompanied with quality musicianship -
not shedloads of fuzzy production.

(there are actually seven songs, - there's a surprise unlisted song at the end - thanks boys!
I found myself wanting another... having played the whole CD straight through - not something I often do)

Clarity and simplicity are the strong points here - unsullied melody! Yay!

I can't really give any higher recommendation than to say; 'buy one from them as soon as you can!' -
a soundtrack for any late Summer, Autumn, Winter whenever!

A good song's got legs, as they used to say and this lovely collection from Mark & Anthony will go the distance.
These songs are strong enough to stay with you.

If this review seems one sided, well... I could nitpick, but it would be just that, nitpicking, and there would be no point.

It also pleases me to be able to say that the boys deliver these songs just as well,
(if not better in some cases!) live...

Don't miss them at the FinalSplat! and
11eVen ! ! and I trust at TettStock!
at the Halfway house on Sunday 17th Aug, when we hope they will perform as many songs
from this brilliant CD as they can!

Sept 6th 2004

.......Bazza & Joe hit a blip in the space time continuum
.......and things get hazy.. ready for the next phase...?
erm....quite...

March 22nd

At the Love-liest live music night in town...
this has to have been one of the loveliest yet!

So once again Jones... Ha!

We rolled up tonight with the spirit of adventuring heroes, spring having sprung,
- instinctively having the feeling that this was going to be a big one...

We weren't wrong.. With an absolutely all star cast list, converging synchronistically,
as is the
JamPlant way, rom 9pm Monday March 22nd to 1am Tuesday March 23rd
the utter musicality and sheer talent from all shades of the spectrum that effervesced
and bubbled within the hallowed walls of La Revolution was truly spellbinding...

We use these terms not for the sake of hyperbole, as is often the case with
muso journos, but from a true and heartfelt sense of the real spirit of what the
JamPlant is all about.. Tonight was it!

Here's the list, Barrie V & Stu Jones casually strolled through a musical soundcheck
which most of the crowd took for a performance, new friend Danny, looking like a faces renegade, impressed everyone with a fine set of Doorsy new acoustics, avec slidey guitar,
Abstain gave their all with their fab old school rock acoustic sound,
another new
JamPlanter joined us, Parv - as fine a Tabla player as you'll hear anywhere,
and again - in the true spirit of the
JamPlant this was another example of musicians who'd never played together before just getting it on 'right here right now' and jamming it out -
frickin' fabulous!

And onward we travelled, another new JamPlanter the Celturian really gave it some elbow, with a splendid display of solo acoustic guitar, closing a wonderfully varied
set with an individualised instrumental version of Kashmir! Nothing wrong with that!

Barrie V & Stu Jones took up the runnings next, again joined by Parv -
who, to everyone's delight had stayed the distance and accompanied just about everyone, showing true
musicality by blending his Tabla with every different stylee he encountered - first playing
6/8 rhythm on Barrie V's Immaculate deception, then helping the psychoacoustic CyBerKarma to ascend to new heights and finally, the three were joined by Joe Gallagher on lead acoustic and Jim Netherington on backing vocals for a version of Summer of Love which, with this incredible mix of musicians suddenly took on the form it always seemed destined for, the Eastern element suiting the songs' rhythms beautifully. Stirring stuff!

And still it continued! The massive voice of Nikki Rous accompanied by the deft guitar
weavings of Joe G, Jim Netherington again with Joe Gallagher delivering his punchy pop acoustics, and then of course, the inimitable Joe Gallagher himself, rounding what had been a truly spectacular night musically as only he can, guitar virtuosity coupled with a voice and songwriting that belie his age... It doesn't get any better than this...

The Munificent Seven ride again... !

(this is the story of seven brothers, we had the same father but different mothers...)

Barrie V Joe Gallagher Mark Flaherty Stu Jones
Matt Taylor Jim Netherington and Pat E

sauntered into BirminghamTown..

and like the true song-slinging wild west heroes they is..
played the two-hour
Jamplant special for the BBC
- regardless of a dearth of mics, no earphones or foldback of
any kind with which to guage our levels.. the Radio equivalent
of being at the wrong end of the the Ok-Corral at sun-up...
But, with cool aplomb, the boys kept their heads and delivered as
fine a set of songs as you'll hear anywhere, wry smiles akimbo,
a fine sense of fun & mucho camaraderie to boot..

today Pebble Mill..

tomorrow...

'domination' ~ it's just so passé dahlings ~

~ Stay tuned for news of the the forthcoming Jamplant
all-stars CD containing tracks from this ground-breaking show ~

February 27th

Ok, time's tight again as usual, and we regret being
unable to give adequate time to properly reviewing
all of the
Jamplant's goings on of late.

But here's a quick rundown..

We've had Roland Chadwick, Olas & Jinder, playing fine sets of music recently
as well as the usual superb (ir)regulars - Barrie V, Stuman, Joe G, Jim N, Mark F,
Spence
, Nikki R, Yasmine, Johnny
... a whole bunch of new friends played on the 23rd, including
Lazy J & Abstain - the list is endless, and we're proud to be able to say that no matter who else performs either at the Jamplant or 11eVen, our very own Jamplanters
hold their own.. (oo-er, we have told them about this but they keep doing it) - seriously, it has been noted and noticeable how impressed our many and varied guests have been by our very own home grown, right here in Wolverplankton, all star team.. Well done people!...
There'll be a short rest from
Jamplant and also 11eVen this next week as we prepare for a WORLD FIRST from the Jamplant
... stay tuned.... 95.6 FM to be exact...

Monday February 2nd

the Jamplant hardcore

Musically a very splendid evening, a bigger crowd than we had last week, (!)
(there's just no accounting for it is there?) and some sparkling performances,
a fine start from Trev who we haven't seen for qu a while,
Barrie V + the Stuman
holding the body of the night up with as fine a set as you'll hear an acoustic duo play,
vocals sax guitars percussion... plus all the usual silliness and banter that is
now trademark stuff at the
Jamplant... musicians thin on the ground early on
tonight, (as ever is) but
Jamplant stalwarts Joe Gallager and Jim Netherington
played a fine set of Jim's rather catchy poppy songs, to match Barrie V + the Stumans',
Marti slottin in for a couple, followed by the unmistakeable
Adam, after which Joe G
played a great set ably assisted by Barrie V + the Stuman yet again (on purple rain -
a current house fave) - and as
Barrie V said to all present, having halted proceedings
before Joe G's last song, "there will come a day when you have to pay to see these
people play, when we don't do this anymore for free, please show your appreciation
of these very fine artists by at least doing them the courtesy of listening"... nuff said.

Friday January 30th

Well, we couldn't resist the temptation to get Maggi Pierce + EJ
back to play a second time and many thanks to Stu Mills for helping
out here. And thanks to the other bands on the night at the Varsity
for shortening their sets to accomodate..

The MPE's showed their class (without opening their legs) by playing
a whole different set than they played at the
Jamplant..
They saw it was a guitar type night and played accordingly and to suit,
rocking things up with a performance that left those present standing
jaw-dropped at it's magnificence...

again... you had to be there... shame on you if you weren't..
Stu Mills himself will tell you how good they were, especially
as they played a Zappa tune to roll out with....

We'll try and get Maggi Pierce and EJ back at the
Jamplant in May...

Sunday January 25th

Live music radio doesn't get any better than this! Maggi Pierce + EJ - the MPEBand
rolled into town and played live on Spence & Rob's Naked Ambition show today
and gave a truly sparkling & mesmerising performance (we know, we were there)
A tantalising and exquisite taste of what will be one of the most enjoyable and
uplifting nights of live music ever to occur in sunny Wolverplankton - at the Jamplant
tomorrow - Monday 26th January.... we advise all true lovers of music to be there...

Saturday January 24th

We came, we saw, we got thrown out, -

Barrie V
+ the Stuman traipsed over to Pebble Mill in Brum to do a live sesh
and interview, for the Ben Turner show, and, sod's law, upon brandishing
sax and guitar, were promptly turfed out due to some system glitch emergency
warning type ting, but, the forces of dark again had no dominion, and upon getting
the all clear the boys razzed back in & up the stairs, straight to the studio
and immediately launched into 'Immaculate Deception', true pro's to the last,
playing a shortened version to allow time for a quick gas before time out...
so, not the most sparkling performance, given the circumstances, (all the mics
in the wrong places, being still set up for the previous band in there, etcyadda)
but no matter, the 'Heretic Gyros' will be back for another run at the beeb thang..
- Saturday 7th Feb

JANUARY 19TH

Fab night musically, and once again, two new faces playing,
Roy Smith on sax, and Andy Leicester guitar vocal.. and with
Nikki Rous and Joe Gallager and Yasmine on sparkling form it was
little wonder that yet another batch of new visitors were approaching
the desk with superlatives bubbling from smiley faces!

January

has already seen some sparkling performances, fabulous jams
and a whole lotta fun goin' on at the Jamplant.. with

Barrie V, the Stuman, Joe Gallager, Nikki Rous, Mark Flaherty,
Steve Lewis, Donovan, Rich Frost.....
the list is illustrious and sprinkled with stardust.......

We'd like to relate a comment passed by one of our many new
visitors lately, and one echoed by many others...

'Why aren't all these people famous?

They're brilliant - much more entertaining than anything
else I'm hearing through the media right now...'

thass a genuine comment dudes... says it all really...

time's tight as usual, wish there were time to say more,
but with lots moving we can only say -

' just get yerself up here - it's all happening, in a wider way!'

Oh all right then, but just a quickie! Ok there is so much good stuff happening lately there hasn't been time for mere details, (anyone fancy helping let me know... hint)
email reviews@interschminter.co.uk but with Barrie V + the Stuman kicking things off and setting the pace as usual, and the unmistakeable Joe Gallager + new faces like Steve Lewis, (a one-man funkrockreggaeblues explosion) and the inimitable (and thankfully more regular again) Mark Flaherty, amongst many others of equal talent and varied direction
(such as the fantastic Nikki Rous), that all we can say is you'd be wise to check the Monday night's at the Revolution, as well as the Wednesday night at the art+music - make them your regular Monday and Wednesday night haunts even, as the sound, the line ups, and most certainly the performances lately have been stunningly good, and the vibeamongus has been like, well splendid,

Update May 31st:

The Jamplant Expansion, Barrie V, (myself...) that'll probably be me on stinging and just about holding rhythm guitar... that's just about holding it, never mind playing... with a splash of blues harp, and percussion, and the Stewman on blissed out sax will hopefully be joined again by Ian Rogers who's been driving the whole thing percussively with some tasty drummings and Greg Ellis who have happily and most delightfully expanded the Jamplant further for three weeks previous, Greg now adding rather splenditious keyboard wizardry (and vocals too) as we jammed various groovy delights, including a fab genuine 70's feeling 'Summer of Love'- and a rousing 'Castles in the Sky'... and with Dave Sandhu on fonky bass, not forgetting the dude who somehow manages to hold it all together soundwise - Andy... sadly we will be without 'Smokin' Joe Lee on guitar, not deftly weaving fluid blues around Barrie V's melodically symphonic pop concoctions, because he'll be doing his t'ing in the Untied Snakes of etc.. Atlanta to be precise... (come back soon Joe)

There'll be further cosmic happenings on a musical tip occuring this coming week, new songs and grooves, strange time signatures akimbo..

stuff you just don't hear anyone else playing...

... twas mentioned last week, by several, (amidst compliments), that it would seem we'd been rehearsing..(!) Perish the thought! Not many would believe us that we did (er, quite literally mate) just jam everything we played over the last two weeks, seein' as we're all too busy/lazy to actually rehearse. I suppose this is, after all, in the spirit of things...

I mean, last Monday, I'd written a new song that afternoon and could only just remember it myself and these boys still made it sound good!
errrk..! haha..plop..

and for a bunch of dudes who hadn't played together before two weeks ago, and then only to regroup on Mondays and play it by ear, we're sounding pretty good, though I say it myself...

- could this be the start of something beautiful?

Anyroad, it's all on the hoof
and off the cuff so to speak, and all the more fun for it!

and this is not to mention the many and varied wonderful guest singer songwriters and musicians who grace us with their presence week in week out - heartfelt thanks to all of you!

after all...

Footnote:

thought for the day...

"Sick souls may indeed be the fruit of sick families and sick societies; but what, in turn, is the measure of sickness for society as a whole? While many criteria might be nominated, there is surely one that ranks above all others: the species that destroys its own habitat in pursuit of false values, in wilful ignorance of what it does, is 'mad' if the word means anything." (Roszak, The Voice Of The Earth, Simon & Schuster, 1992, p.68)
